Hi, jw why did all the bachelorette men think they signed up for Emily and not Ashley?

i'm very curious after last nights show, why do all the Bachelorette contestants seem to think they signed up with Emily and not Ashley, did they sign up before they even knew who the Bachelorette was going to be or what, just very curious lol, 10 points who knows.
