Why do people always seem to associate evolution with religious beliefs?

Most people don't have a clue what science is or how it works. And creationists have played to that brilliantly. The idea of "teaching both sides" appeals to our sense of fairness but what people don't realise is that science is not a democracy. Everyone loves an underdog and that is what they have painted creationism as. Being oppressed by big, bad evolution.
